Apple Updates iPhone iOS on AT&T (4.3.2) and Verizon (4.2.7)

Apple has released the latest firmware files for iOS devices containing bug fixes and security updates. Verizon iPhone 4 owners were not left out of the fun this time, getting their own iOS 4.2.7 updates specifically for the CDMA device. Those experiencing blank or frozen FaceTime video issues should find that the firmware update fixes these problems.

Both iPhone 4 and iPad 2 owners reported the FaceTime issue was affecting Apple devices running iOS 4.3. Another issue that was widely reported in the news was a connectivity problem causing issues with the iPad connecting to 3G networks.

According to Apple, a fix for the 3G connection problems is also included in the latest update. iOS 4.2.7 doesn't seem to have many major changes, however Verizon customers will be happy to know they get the latest security updates and bug fixes as well. AT&T iPhone owners have seen their version of the iOS mobile operating system updated more than once since the launch of the Verizon model.

The iOS 4.3.2 update is compatible with the following devices:

- iPhone 4 (GSM on AT&T)
- iPhone 3GS
- iPad 2
- iPad
- iPod touch 3rd generation
- iPod touch 4th generation

The iOS 4.2.7 update is compatible with the iPhone 4 (CDMA on Verizon). The correct version of the firmware for your device will appear in iTunes automatically when your hardware is connected to the computer and you proceed with an update.

Complete security update information can be found at Apple for both the iOS 4.3.2 and the iOS 4.2.7 updates. Webkit, QuickLook and Certificate Trust Policy were all patched in both versions of the firmware. Still no word on whether or not these updates contain any battery life improvements for those who have found their battery to run down quickly after installing iOS 4.3.

Apple was the source of many other software releases this week, as the company launched the new iOS firmwares along with security updates for Snow Leopard, Leopard, and Leopard Server, a new version of Safari (5.0.5) and Xcode (4.0.2) for developers.

Two Great iPhone Jailbreak Apps for Wi-Fi

Looking for more ways to improve your jailbroken iPhone? Many applications are available that expand the features and functions of your iPhone beyond what Apple allows. Tethering is one such function that makes it possible to use your 3G data connection to create a Wi-Fi hotspot for other devices. AT&T has finally made an official tethering solution available, but many customers don't want to pay the extra expense.
apple iphone jailbreak app mywi

Enter MyWi 4.0. This jailbreak app creates a Wi-Fi hotspot instantly and allows multiple notebooks or other devices to use the iPhone data connection. USB tethering is also an option, and the Wi-Fi network you create will feature WEP security.

MyWi 4.0 broadcasts the SSID network name just like a real wireless router, and tracks upstream and download bandwidth usage when connected. MyWi can be installed via Cydia and features a three-day free trial. Unlimited tethering (within the constraints of your data plan) requires that you purchase MyWi for $19.99. AT&T charges $20 per month for its tethering plan.

Ever get tired of carting around the Apple USB cable to sync your iPhone to iTunes on the computer? You can sync wirelessly over your own network with Wi-Fi Sync. This app installs for free on your computer, and the companion iPhone app is available on Cydia for $9.99. Wi-Fi Sync will duplicate the USB syncing process with iTunes, transferring music, apps, photos, contacts, email accounts and calendars just as if the cable were connected.

Wi-Fi Sync does not sync with iPhoto and will not allow iTunes to update or restore firmware wirelessly. Still, if you're interested in making the everyday iPhone sync process much easier and convenient Wi-Fi Sync is the way to go, especially if your iPhone is already jailbroken.

Experience Vimeo.com on your iPhone

Popular video enthusiast site Vimeo.com does not have the same level of viewership as YouTube, but it's definitely a great place to find interesting user-made videos. Today, Vimeo released a free iPhone app that lets you bring the video site with you on the go, but it lacks one very important feature.

Vimeo for iPhone (free) lets you join up with the site or log in within the app so you can upload, edit, and view videos on your iPhone. It comes with many of the popular Vimeo user-requested features like the Inbox, the ability to Watch Later, and Vimeo's selection of Channels. The interface uses buttons across the bottom of the screen, letting you browse your finished videos in My Videos, flick through your current projects in Recordings, and look at videos you previously "liked" in My Stuff. There's also a place to Browse Vimeo videos and look at your account information.

When you want to make a video of your own, simply hit the My Videos button and create a new video using your iPhone camera or choose an existing video from your library. From there you'll be able to edit the video for length, join video clips together with some simple transitions, add audio (the Vimeo app offers some samples, but you can also use your music library), and add a title to your project.

In our testing, whether we were watching regular or HD videos, the Vimeo for iPhone experience was incredibly smooth. We were able to browse videos by category and flick through several submissions. The one feature that's not available is the ability to search for videos at the Vimeo site, but the folks at Vimeo pointed out that they made sure to get many of the traditional Vimeo features like Watch Later and Channels into this version first and will be adding search hopefully in the next release.

Overall, Vimeo for iPhone is an excellent way to check out the popular video Web site's content with many of the features Vimeo users have come to love. Once Vimeo adds search to this well-made app, it will be the ideal app for browsing Vimeo.com.

Google updates finance search for Android, iPhone

Google made a few tweaks today to the way it presents financial information in its mobile search results.

Now, typing a stock symbol into the Google.com search bar in on your iPhone or Android smartphone (2.1 or above) returns useful data in a glance, including the stock's share price and an interactive graph you can click on to see fluctuations over a day up to a five-year span.

What's more, the results appear on four "cards," or screens, that you can swipe through to see additional news, and a market overview. Those of you signed on to your Google account can also swipe to see a summarized view of your Google Finance stock portfolio.

Apple Releases iOS 4.3.1 Security and Maintenance Update

The latest firmware from Apple is already here. Just over two weeks after the release of iOS 4.3 for GSM iPhones, Apple has added bug fixes and other minor updates to iOS 4.3.1. The update was made available on iTunes earlier than expected. Verizon iPhones (CDMA) will remain at iOS 4.2.6 for the time being.

This update is also designed for the iPad, iPad 2 and fourth generation iPod touch. Although the update is relatively minor, if you are one of the users affected by issues addressed in the update you'll want to install the new firmware right away.

According to Apple, the iOS 4.3.1 update contains the following fixes and improvements:

- Fixes an occasional graphics glitch on iPod touch (4th generation)
- Resolves bugs related to activating and connecting to some cellular networks
- Fixes image flicker when using Apple Digital AV Adapter with some TVs
- Resolves an issue authenticating with some enterprise web services

On Monday, BGR reported that the iOS 4.3.1 update was expected within one or two weeks. Sources also told them the update would include the following fixes:

- Baseband updates for the iPhone 3GS and original iPad
- Fixed memory hang that results in memory corruption when reading large files from USIM filesystem
- Fixed problem with NTLM authentication in apps and on websites
- Fixed issue with the Springboard and 3rd party apps not recognizing the gyroscope on the iPad 2
- Fixed iPad 2 jailbreak vulnerability

Some reports have indicated that the update improves battery life, but this is unconfirmed. Apple also makes no mention of a Safari security fix reportedly in the works. Security researcher Charlie Miller exposed a flaw in the mobile browser that Apple is said to be working on patching, if they haven't already. It remains to be seen whether or not any further updates to 4.3 are forthcoming. With the release of the iPhone 5 coming soon, Apple is expected to jump to iOS 5.0 in June.
