How to Use Find My iPhone For Free in iOS 4.2

You may have heard that Apple now offers the Find My iPhone service for free to iPhone 4 owners who have installed the iOS 4.2 update. When set up properly, the service locates and even sends messages to the lost device. Find My iPhone can also remotely lock or erase your iPhone.

Setting up the service no longer requires a paid MobileMe subscription with Apple to use. To set up Find My iPhone on your device follow these instructions.

Setting up your iPhone

1. Navigate to Settings -> General -> Location Services. Make sure Location Services is ON.
2. Navigate to Settings -> Mail -> Add Account -> MobileMe.
3. Enter your Apple ID and password and touch Next. Your Apple ID is the same account you use to connect to iTunes. If you see an error message check your email account for a verification message from Apple, then try again.
4. After your account verifies, set Find My iPhone to ON. Tap Save.
5. Your iPhone 4 is now configured to use the Find My iPhone service.

Finding your iPhone

You can use the portal at me.com to find your iPhone from a computer. Log in with your Apple ID and you will be able to find your device on a map, display a message on the iPhone's screen, play a sound, lock the iPhone with a passcode, or wipe all data from the device.

You can also use an iPhone app to find your iPhone or other iOS devices. Download and install Find My iPhone from the App Store. Log into the app with your Apple ID, and all iOS devices you have configured to work with the service will appear in a list. Your iPhone, iPad or other iOS device can be viewed on a map in the application. You can also write messages to the screen, lock the device, or wipe all data just like you can on the MobileMe website.

Two Great iPhone Jailbreak Apps for Wi-Fi

Looking for more ways to improve your jailbroken iPhone? Many applications are available that expand the features and functions of your iPhone beyond what Apple allows. Tethering is one such function that makes it possible to use your 3G data connection to create a Wi-Fi hotspot for other devices. AT&T has finally made an official tethering solution available, but many customers don't want to pay the extra expense.

Enter MyWi 4.0. This jailbreak app creates a Wi-Fi hotspot instantly and allows multiple notebooks or other devices to use the iPhone data connection. USB tethering is also an option, and the Wi-Fi network you create will feature WEP security.

MyWi 4.0 broadcasts the SSID network name just like a real wireless router, and tracks upstream and download bandwidth usage when connected. MyWi can be installed via Cydia and features a three-day free trial. Unlimited tethering (within the constraints of your data plan) requires that you purchase MyWi for $19.99. AT&T charges $20 per month for its tethering plan.

Ever get tired of carting around the Apple USB cable to sync your iPhone to iTunes on the computer? You can sync wirelessly over your own network with Wi-Fi Sync. This app installs for free on your computer, and the companion iPhone app is available on Cydia for $9.99. Wi-Fi Sync will duplicate the USB syncing process with iTunes, transferring music, apps, photos, contacts, email accounts and calendars just as if the cable were connected.

Wi-Fi Sync does not sync with iPhoto and will not allow iTunes to update or restore firmware wirelessly. Still, if you're interested in making the everyday iPhone sync process much easier and convenient Wi-Fi Sync is the way to go, especially if your iPhone is already jailbroken.

Experience Vimeo.com on your iPhone

Popular video enthusiast site Vimeo.com does not have the same level of viewership as YouTube, but it's definitely a great place to find interesting user-made videos. Today, Vimeo released a free iPhone app that lets you bring the video site with you on the go, but it lacks one very important feature.

Vimeo for iPhone (free) lets you join up with the site or log in within the app so you can upload, edit, and view videos on your iPhone. It comes with many of the popular Vimeo user-requested features like the Inbox, the ability to Watch Later, and Vimeo's selection of Channels. The interface uses buttons across the bottom of the screen, letting you browse your finished videos in My Videos, flick through your current projects in Recordings, and look at videos you previously "liked" in My Stuff. There's also a place to Browse Vimeo videos and look at your account information.

When you want to make a video of your own, simply hit the My Videos button and create a new video using your iPhone camera or choose an existing video from your library. From there you'll be able to edit the video for length, join video clips together with some simple transitions, add audio (the Vimeo app offers some samples, but you can also use your music library), and add a title to your project.

In our testing, whether we were watching regular or HD videos, the Vimeo for iPhone experience was incredibly smooth. We were able to browse videos by category and flick through several submissions. The one feature that's not available is the ability to search for videos at the Vimeo site, but the folks at Vimeo pointed out that they made sure to get many of the traditional Vimeo features like Watch Later and Channels into this version first and will be adding search hopefully in the next release.

Overall, Vimeo for iPhone is an excellent way to check out the popular video Web site's content with many of the features Vimeo users have come to love. Once Vimeo adds search to this well-made app, it will be the ideal app for browsing Vimeo.com.

11 iPhone tips for total novices

1. When in doubt, go Home.
Want to go back to the main screen, the one with all the icons? That's called the Home screen. It doesn't matter which app you're using or task you're performing--a single press of the Home button (the only physical button on the front of the iPhone) will return you to the Home screen.

2. Always turn your iPhone off before you slip it into your pocket.
Although your iPhone will switch itself into idle mode (where the screen turns off but the phone stays on) after a designated period of inactivity, you should get in the habit of manually turning off the screen. Otherwise you might accidentally place a call or run a battery-draining app while slipping the phone into your pocket. So remember: when you're done using your iPhone, press the top button (aka, the Sleep/Wake button).

3. Send calls straight to voice mail.
Don't want to answer the incoming call, but don't want your iPhone to keep ringing and/or vibrating until it finally goes to voice mail? Just quickly double-press the Sleep/Wake button to immediately route the call the voice mail.

4. Double-tap the space bar at the end of a sentence.
Speaking of double-presses, if you quickly tap the space bar twice at the end of a sentence, the iPhone will insert a period and a space, then enable the Shift key for the start of your next sentence.

5. Access the keypad while you're on a call.
Need to "press 1 to leave a message" or enter a security code while on a call? The iPhone has no keypad, so how are you supposed to do that? Simple: just take the phone away from your ear, then tap the Keypad icon that appears in between the Mute and Speaker icons (which can also come in handy when you're on a call). Now use the onscreen keys to enter the necessary numbers. When you're done, just hold the phone back up to your head.

6. Don't forget to sync.
Your iPhone is not an island; it needs to connect with your computer, even if it's just once in a while. That means installing iTunes if you don't already have it and plugging that little white sync cable into a USB port (and then into your iPhone, natch). Although you can download apps, music, and the like directly to your device (i.e., no computer required), syncing makes a backup of everything on your handset (contacts, appointments, apps, etc.)--something you might need in the event you have to replace a lost, stolen, or broken phone. It also allows you to install operating-system updates.

7. Master autocorrect.
Even savvy users sometimes get thrown by the little word-bubbles that sometimes appear as you type. This is the iPhone's autocorrect feature: it's trying to guess which word you're trying to spell. If you want to accept the suggestion (even before you finish typing), just tap the space bar. Don't want the suggested word? Tap the little X in the bubble before you hit the space bar.

8. Fix "jittery" icons.
Did all your icons start shaking all of sudden? Don't panic! You've inadvertently put the iPhone into "rearrange icons" mode, which allows you to organize the icons to your liking by tapping and dragging them. This happens when you hold your finger down on an icon (any icon) instead of just tapping it. How do you stop the shaking? Easy: just press the Home button.

9. Learn to use Airplane Mode.
Federal law says your phone needs to be off when you're in the air. But that doesn't mean off, off; you simply have to disable its wireless capabilities. To do so, put it in Airplane Mode: tap the Settings icon, then tap the Airplane Mode on/off switch (which is conveniently located at the very top of the Settings screen). When it's set to On, your iPhone won't be able to make calls or send text messages--but it'll still work as an iPod. In other words, you can still read books, listen to music, watch movies, play games, and so on. After you land, just return to the Settings screen and set Airplane Mode back to off.

10. Access the built-in User Guide.
Apple sure didn't provide much in the way of an instruction manual. Fortunately, for anyone who needs help on the go, there's a user guide built into the iPhone--sort of. To access it, tap the Safari icon (which opens the Web browser). Next, tap the Bookmark icon (it looks like a little open book) at the bottom of the screen. You should see an entry for iPhone User Guide. Tap it to gain access to a full roster of subjects, everything from Getting Started to Using the App Store.

11. Turn off "Ask to Join Networks"
Everywhere you go, your iPhone keeps asking you if you want to join this network or that network. These are Wi-Fi hot spots, and if you're tired of the iPhone bugging you about them, you can turn off these notifications. To do so, tap the Settings icon, then tap Wi-Fi. On the following screen, find Ask to Join Networks and tap the On button (which will switch to Off). The only caveat here is that if you want to view and join an available network, you'll have to return to this screen and select it manually. Find out more in the aforementioned User Guide.

OK, those are my tips--now let's hear yours! After all, everyone was an iPhone novice once, so what advice would you offer to the newbie user?

Use Your iPhone as a USB Drive

Your iPhone has plenty of storage space, only thing is every time you connect it to your computer iTunes runs the show. Wouldn't it be great to carry your files around with you and not have to worry about a separate USB drive? iPhone Explorer is free software for Mac and Windows that makes this possible.
apple iphone explorer free usb disk

The application opens up the flash memory of your iPhone into simple-to-use drag and drop folders. Files can be transferred to and from your computer hard drive right over the USB connection. iPhone Explorer is compatible with all iPhone models and works with OR without a jailbreak.

iOS firmware versions 2.0 and later are compatible with iPhone Explorer. Macs must be running OS X 10.5 or later and have iTunes 8 or later installed. Windows machines need iTunes 9 or later and Windows XP or later to run the PC version. The program is freeware and takes up less than 4MB on your hard drive after it's installed.

Besides drag and drop functionality, folders and files can be created, renamed and deleted using the iPhone Explorer interface. Photos on the iPhone can even be previewed right in the browser before transferring them to your computer. Those who have jailbroken their iPhones will find that iPhone Explorer makes it possible to retrieve additional files including SMS messages, voicemails, contacts and e-mail messages.

Take back manual control of your iPhone filesystem. Or ditch that redundant USB thumb drive and start using the extra space on your iPhone to store and transfer important files. All this for free and with no jailbreaking required.
